Each year, 135 MD students enroll in the Pathways program and study pre-medical school alongside 35 HSDM first-year students. HST admits an additional 30 MD students who wish to become physician scientists. Preparation for the HST course
is shared between HMS and MIT, and the HST MD course is taught jointly with PhD students in Medical Engineering – Medical Physics at MIT.
The HST track also follows a three-level curriculum, but the first phase is six months longer than the Pathways program. It fits MIT’s semester structure and allows time for intensive research. As a result, there are two 6-month “phase transition” enrollment points during the PCE period.
Pathways students enter each fall and HST students enter each spring. Finally, an additional 6 months of Pathways post-PCE period allows for an additional 3 months of core and population/social science courses and mentoring research experiences.
For HBCUs with gardens, Collins’ project provides students with a specific framework for planting or landscaping trees that enhance mental health. A personal growth plan follows the same principles of gardening: plant a seed, plant it, water it, feed it, and determine what the seed needs to grow.
