Byers Choice Advent Calendar – In 1908, German Gerhard Lang published the first “Advent Calendar” advertisement. As a child at Christmas time, his mother made him a board with 24 candies taped to it and allowed him to take one down each morning during Advent.
Keeping this in mind when Lang designed his calendar, he created a calendar with colorful thumbnails so that children could add a new calendar to the scene each day. The advent countdown calendar is designed with 24 numbered doors that can hide little surprises for each day.

German advent calendars were very popular in the 20s and 30s. Countless new designs were created and sold around the world. However, during World War II, production ceased when cardboard was rationed and picture calendars were banned in Germany.

After the war, in 1946, an artist named Richard Selmer created a paper advent calendar depicting a street in a small town with doors and windows opening to reveal Christmas celebrations inside the buildings. He printed and sold it all over Germany and later built a business for himself, designing and printing advent calendars that were used by his children and grandchildren after his death.
Around this time, advent calendars spread across the United States, aided by pictures in a newspaper article showing President Eisenhower’s grandchildren all gathered around an advent calendar in a small town, counting down the days to Christmas.

they did. For generations, people have used different ways to mark the days leading up to Christmas. Beginning in Protestant areas of Germany in the 18th and 19th centuries, it became common to observe the season of Advent as a time of reflection and preparation for the celebration of Christmas.
To mark the passing of the season, many families would draw chalk lines on the kitchen wall or place an “apparition clock,” a wreath with 24 candles, one of which would be lit each evening at dinner.
