Adam, one of our members, sent me a calendar he’s used for over 10 years and asked if I could explain how some of the formulas work. The original source of the calendar appears to be a Microsoft template (I’m using a similar one), but Adam has expanded it by adding a holiday table that conditionally formats the calendar cells with a fill color.

START – The first digit (ie date) must be a date that falls on a Sunday. This does not necessarily mean the first Sunday of the chosen year, as January 1 does not always fall on a Sunday.
In those cases, the first Sunday in our table is a date from the previous year. If the Developer Ribbon is not visible, open Excel Options to enable it. In Excel 2007, the option is available on the Popular menu.

Remember cell A3 contains the year, with 2019 currently selected. Therefore, the DATE function simply returns the date; September 1, 2019. The WEEKDAY function returns 1 if the date returned by DATE is Sunday, 2 if the day is Monday, and so on.
September 1, 2019 is Sunday. +1 is then added to the result. Tip: You can also search for more calendar templates online. Downloaded templates are placed in a temporary folder on your computer. You may want to immediately save a template to a different location so that you can easily find it later.
To quickly find all the calendar templates available on Office.com or on your computer, type calendar in the Excel workbook gallery search box. The formula is not really correct.
