The Gateway Scholarship can be applied for through traditional in-person classes at Wingate or through the university’s undergraduate liberal studies online program. To help Gateway Scholars keep up, Wingate and Blue Ridge Community College are partnering to offer academic advising, financial aid counseling and career counseling.

“Our greatest desire as educators is to provide opportunities for students to excel,” Leatherwood said. “This expanded relationship with Wingate University leverages the strengths of our institutions and enables students to achieve their academic goals through our closely aligned programs.”

We are excited to work together to make higher education more accessible while strengthening North Carolina’s workforce. Blue Ridge Community College graduates can earn a bachelor’s degree at Wingate University for $2,500 a year or less, thanks to a new partnership between the two institutions.

The Gateway Scholarship was announced by Blue Ridge Community College President Dr. Laura Leatherwood and Wingate University President Dr. Rhett Brown. The agreement also defined clear pathways to four-year degrees in human services, criminal justice, business, education and psychology.

The presidents also signed an agreement between Blue Ridge Community College and the Wingate School of Pharmacy in which the university agreed to reserve up to 10 admissions slots each academic year for qualified Blue Ridge students with at least a 3.0 GPA.

Blue Ridge students heading to the Wingate School of Pharmacy can participate in the campus Pre-Pharmacy Club and receive support from Wingate’s Head of Health. Leatherwood and Brown said the Gateway scholarship will help the state close the education gap.

According to the nonprofit MyFutureNC, 67 percent of jobs statewide require a college degree or advanced certificate, but only 49 percent of North Carolinians ages 25 to 44 have that education. In Henderson County, 44 percent have a degree or associate’s degree, but only 26 percent have a bachelor’s degree or more.

For years, Blue Ridge students in Transylvania and Henderson counties have transferred credits toward the core requirements of Wingate programs through the North Carolina Independent Comprehensive Agreement. The new agreement expands this relationship by further defining specific transfer options for several of Wingate’s four-year degrees.
