After the plant closed, Lawrence County converted part of the building into a heavy equipment maintenance shop. It served as a county store for several years. Deadwood’s economy took a dramatic turn in 1989 when small-time gambling became legal in Deadwood.

Old storefronts, empty warehouses and historic buildings up and down Main Street have been turned into casinos, restaurants and hotels. But the slime plant was barely working. Historic preservationists and Deadwood officials have tried for years to find the right adaptive reuse for this old mining-era structure in Deadwood’s new gaming economy.
